Hawaii is a group of 19 volcanic islands situated at the northeast corner of Polynesia.
There are eight major islands, six of those are available for tourism.
The island of Hawaii... "the Big Island" is the largest of the islands. It's home to the largest volcano on Earth. The Kohala Coast on the leeward side of the island has nearly zero annual precipitation. Travel the saddle road between the massive volcanos to get to Hilo, on the windward side, which has over 300" of rain annually.
Oahu... the "Gathering Place" is the most populous of the islands and is home to Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, Pearl Harbor, and in the winter, some of the largest waves on Earth.
Maui... the "Valley Isle" is home to the 10,000 foot tall volcanic mountain crater of Haleakala. The west and south sides of the island are home to several popular resort areas. The tiny village of Hana, on the east side of the island, is accessed via one of the most beautiful roads anywhere.
Kauai... the "Garden Isle" hosts many spectacular natural formations including the Wailua River, Waimea Canyon, and the Na Pali Coast. Mount Waialeale is known as one of the rainiest spots on the planet.
Molokai... the "Friendly Isle" is one of the least developed of the islands. It's home to the leper colony at Kalaupapa and once the home of Father Damien. Unless invited to Kalaupapa by a resident, visitors are only allowed access via a commercial tour.
Lanai... for many years the island was a private pineapple plantation but is now the site of several beautiful resorts.
